The first new elementary schools to be built in the Eugene School District in 35 years were completed in 2004. Cesar Chavez Elementary took the place of Patterson and Westmoreland elementaries and Bertha Holt Elementary replaced Washington and Willakenzie elementaries. Each school features approximately 67,400 sq. ft. of usable space including four wings featuring six classrooms each, organized around a commons area that can be used as teaching space. Combining the schools into larger facilities meant more administrative efficiencies and bigger and better libraries, media centers, gymnasiums and cafeterias.
